Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Summary
Assam Veterinary and Fishery University is a specialized state university headquartered at Khanapara in Guwahati and focused on veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences. It was created in 2024 by reorganizing veterinary and fisheries institutions that had previously functioned within Assam Agricultural University. The Assam Veterinary and Fishery University Act, 2024 received the Governor’s assent on 25 September 2024 and was published in the Assam Gazette on 27 September. The new university brings together the College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara, the Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science in North Lakhimpur and the College of Fisheries at Raha. It also includes Krishi Vigyan Kendras in several districts together with specialized livestock and goat research stations. This structure gave the university immediate teaching, research and extension capacity. Its constituent institutions carry much older histories than the university itself. Veterinary education in Assam dates to the Assam Veterinary College established in 1948, which later shifted to Guwahati and then to Khanapara. The Lakhimpur veterinary college expanded professional education in the late 1980s, while the fisheries college at Raha developed specialist training for the state’s aquatic-resource sector. Bringing these units together under a separate university creates a dedicated framework for veterinary medicine, livestock production, animal health, fisheries, aquaculture and related research. Extension units connect academic expertise with farmers, livestock owners and fish producers. The university’s headquarters at Khanapara places it within Guwahati while retaining a distributed network across Assam. Appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor in 2025 marked an important step in establishing independent governance after the 2024 legislation. Assam Veterinary and Fishery University therefore combines a new statutory identity with decades of inherited teaching and research experience. Its creation reflects a policy decision to give animal and fisheries sciences a specialized university structure capable of coordinating professional education, applied research and extension across Assam.
