University of Jammu, Jammu Tawi Summary
The University of Jammu is a public teaching, research and affiliating university serving the Jammu region of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It came into existence in 1969 under the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act after the former University of Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into separate universities at Jammu and Srinagar. The university developed from a small initial academic structure into a multidisciplinary institution with teaching departments, affiliated colleges and offsite campuses intended to improve access to higher education across a geographically diverse region. Its main campus at Bahu Wali Rakh in Jammu accommodates teaching departments, the central library, student-welfare services, computing facilities, hostels, sports facilities, health services and administrative units. The university also maintains its old campus and has developed offsite campuses in locations including Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramnagar, Reasi and Udhampur. This network is important because much of the Jammu region consists of hilly and remote districts where travel to the main city can be difficult. Academic work spans sciences, life sciences, arts, social sciences, business studies, education, law, languages, behavioural sciences and other professional fields. The university combines postgraduate teaching and doctoral research with responsibility for a substantial affiliated-college system. Its regional centres have allowed programmes and research activity to extend beyond Jammu city, while departments on the main campus support specialized scholarship in areas ranging from biotechnology and environmental sciences to history, Buddhist studies, management and law. The institution also operates distance and online education services. Over time, the University of Jammu has become a major academic centre for the Jammu division, balancing its responsibilities as a campus university, research institution, examining body and affiliating university. This distributed model is especially significant in a region where mountain terrain makes local access to advanced education an important public priority.
