Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science & Technology of Jammu, Jammu Summary
Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu is a specialised public agricultural university serving the Jammu division of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It came into existence on 20 September 1999 after the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Act, 1982 was amended to create a separate agricultural university for Jammu. The new institution inherited the region-specific responsibility for agricultural education, research and extension in Jammu, allowing programmes and scientific work to be tailored more closely to the division's diverse agro-climatic conditions. Its mandate follows the integrated agricultural-university model in which teaching, research and extension operate together rather than as isolated functions. Academic and research work addresses agriculture and allied sectors, including crop production, horticulture, animal sciences, veterinary health, natural-resource management and technologies intended to improve farm productivity and rural livelihoods. The university's field orientation is especially important because the Jammu region ranges from plains and subtropical zones to hills and mountain environments, creating highly varied farming problems within a single university jurisdiction. Research stations, field units and extension programmes allow university scientists to test technologies under local conditions and communicate findings to farmers, livestock owners and rural communities. Professional education in agriculture and veterinary sciences is supported by laboratories, farms, clinical and field facilities, and postgraduate research opportunities. The institution also works through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and other outreach mechanisms that link academic expertise with practical training, demonstrations and advisory services. Its establishment separated Jammu's agricultural-university administration from the Kashmir-centred structure while retaining the broader Sher-e-Kashmir university tradition created in the early 1980s. SKUAST-Jammu is therefore both a regional university and a specialised science institution, with its academic identity defined by direct engagement with the agricultural and livestock systems of Jammu division. The university's most distinctive strength is this regional research-and-extension mandate, which connects professional education and scientific.
