Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Banaskantha Summary
Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University is a specialised state agricultural university serving northern Gujarat from Sardarkrushinagar near Dantiwada in Banaskantha district. Its roots lie in the former Gujarat Agricultural University, which was created by state legislation in 1969 and developed a statewide system of agricultural education, research and extension. Agricultural research activity at Sardarkrushinagar expanded from the early 1970s, building expertise suited to the dry and semi-arid farming systems of north and north-west Gujarat. In 2004 the Government of Gujarat reorganised the former Gujarat Agricultural University into four separate agricultural universities, and Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University came into existence on 1 May 2004. The university inherited regional colleges, research stations, laboratories and extension responsibilities from the earlier statewide structure, giving it a mature agricultural base from its first day as an independent institution. Its mandate integrates education, research and extension rather than treating them as separate activities, with academic work linked closely to crop production, livestock, natural-resource management and rural livelihoods. The university's jurisdiction covers a broad northern Gujarat region that includes districts with arid, semi-arid and water-limited agricultural conditions. That geography shapes research priorities around locally relevant crops, animal husbandry, soil and water management, horticulture, agricultural engineering and technologies suited to farmers in the region. SDAU also supports postgraduate research through specialised laboratories and research centres, while extension units translate university knowledge into field-level recommendations and farmer training. Its Sardarkrushinagar campus, located near the foothills of the Aravalli range, provides the institutional centre for teaching, research administration and agricultural innovation. The university therefore represents a regionally focused continuation of Gujarat's longer agricultural-university tradition, with a mission that connects scientific research directly with farming systems and rural development. Its strongest institutional characteristic is the three-part land-grant-style model of teaching, research and extension adapted to the agricultural realities of northern Gujarat.
