University of Agricultural Sciences Mandya Summary
The University of Agricultural Sciences, Mandya is a newly constituted state agricultural university centred at V.C. Farm in Mandya, Karnataka. Its institutional roots are much older than the university itself. The V.C. Farm area developed as an important agricultural-research location from the early twentieth century, including a sugarcane research station established in 1931. The College of Agriculture at Mandya was founded in 1991 and for decades operated within the wider agricultural-university system of Karnataka. In 2025, the Government of Karnataka approved the creation of a separate agricultural university at Mandya to provide a stronger regional academic and research structure for the Old Mysuru area. The new university is designed around the established V.C. Farm ecosystem, where education, research, and extension operate together. Official university information identifies the College of Agriculture, Regional Agricultural Research Station, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra as major components of the Mandya campus. The planned jurisdiction covers Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu, bringing together institutions and field units that address the agricultural diversity of southern Karnataka. UAS Mandya’s regional context is distinctive. The Cauvery irrigation system, sugarcane and paddy cultivation, horticulture, plantation crops, forestry, and mixed farming create a broad base for teaching and applied research. The V.C. Farm campus itself contains extensive irrigated agricultural land used for research, demonstrations, and practical education. The university is expected to build upon the long research and extension legacy of Mandya while expanding postgraduate education and regional coordination. Its creation represents a new phase in Karnataka’s agricultural-university system: an established agricultural college and research complex has been elevated into a university with a defined multi-district mandate. This allows local farming problems, student training, technology transfer, and region-specific research to be coordinated through a dedicated public institution. The new structure builds on field research, teaching, and farmer outreach at V.C. Farm.
