PROFESSOR JAYASHANKAR TELANGANA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY (PJTAU) Summary
Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University is a public agricultural university headquartered at Rajendranagar in Hyderabad and created to serve the agricultural education, research and extension needs of Telangana. The university was established in 2014 following the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh and inherited a substantial part of the agricultural academic and research network that had developed under the former Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University and later Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University. It is named after Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar, a scholar and public intellectual closely associated with the Telangana movement. PJTAU follows the integrated agricultural-university model in which teaching, research and extension operate as connected functions rather than separate institutional activities. Its academic structure includes colleges in agriculture, agricultural engineering and community science, supported by polytechnics and specialized units. Research is organized through a network of stations working on crops, farming systems, soil and water management, plant protection and region-specific production challenges. Extension activity reaches farmers through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Telangana Rural Knowledge Centres, the Agricultural Technology Information Centre, electronic media and training programs. The university’s historical lineage reaches back to the establishment of Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University in 1964, itself shaped by national recommendations for state agricultural universities based on the land-grant model. That heritage gives PJTAU an established research and extension base despite its relatively recent statutory creation. Its role is strongly linked to Telangana’s farming economy, seed sector and need for locally adapted agricultural technologies. Official university milestones describe a network that includes constituent colleges, polytechnics, research stations, regional research facilities and extension centres distributed across Telangana. The university combines degree education with field-based research, farmer training, technology demonstrations and advisory services designed to translate scientific work into agricultural practice. Its Rajendranagar headquarters connects academic departments with major research, extension and information units serving students, scientists and farming communities.
