Suravaram Pratapa Reddy Telugu University, Hyderabad Summary
Suravaram Pratapa Reddy Telugu University in Hyderabad is a specialized public university dedicated to Telugu language, literature, history, culture, fine arts and performing arts. The institution began as Telugu University under Andhra Pradesh Act No. 27 of 1985 and formally came into force on 2 December 1985. Its creation brought several cultural and literary bodies under one academic umbrella, including academies connected with literature, music, drama, dance and fine arts, together with the International Telugu Institute and Telugu Bhasha Samiti. This unusual origin gave the university a broader cultural mandate than a conventional language department: it was designed to support teaching, research, publication, translation, lexicography, arts training, archaeology, folklore and the preservation of Telugu heritage. The university developed campuses and specialized centres in different cultural regions, including work associated with folk and tribal lore and classical performing traditions. A 1996 statutory amendment renamed the institution Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University, and it operated under that name for decades. In 2025, Telangana moved to rename the university after Suravaram Pratapa Reddy, the noted Telugu scholar, journalist and cultural figure, giving the institution its current identity reflected in the source record. Through degree, diploma, certificate, research and publication activity, the university continues to connect formal higher education with living cultural traditions. Its Hyderabad headquarters remains a centre for advanced study of Telugu language and culture while its institutional legacy spans literature, performing arts, history, heritage and public cultural scholarship. The university’s statutory objectives also include translation between Telugu and other languages and the collection and study of inscriptions connected with Telugu history and culture. The university was established as Telugu University under Act No. 27 of 1985. The establishing Act came into force on 2 December 1985. It was created by bringing several Telugu literary, cultural and arts institutions under one university framework.
