University of Kashmir, Srinagar Summary
The University of Kashmir is a public university based at Hazratbal in Srinagar and is one of the principal centres of higher education and research in the Kashmir Valley. Its institutional history begins with the University of Jammu and Kashmir, founded in 1948. In 1969 that university was bifurcated into two full-fledged institutions, creating the University of Kashmir at Srinagar and the University of Jammu at Jammu. The Srinagar university retained and expanded academic responsibilities across the Kashmir region while developing a distinctive campus system and research profile. The main university area at Hazratbal lies between Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake and is divided into the Hazratbal, Naseem Bagh and Mirza Bagh campuses, with additional land at Zakura supporting expansion. The institution has also established satellite campuses at Anantnag in south Kashmir, Baramulla in north Kashmir and Kupwara, widening access to postgraduate and professional education outside Srinagar. Teaching and research extend across arts, languages, social sciences, physical and biological sciences, education, law, business, engineering, technology and other interdisciplinary fields. The Himalayan setting also creates strong opportunities for work related to ecology, climate, earth sciences, biodiversity, culture and regional development. The university's academic role combines campus teaching, doctoral research, student support and a broader affiliating and examining function. Its location gives scholars access to social, environmental and cultural questions specific to the Kashmir Valley while maintaining national and international academic connections. Over decades, the university has expanded from the structure inherited in 1969 into a multi-campus institution with specialized schools, centres and laboratories. The University of Kashmir therefore occupies both a regional and wider academic role: it provides advanced education for students across the valley, supports research on subjects of global and Himalayan relevance, and contributes to the intellectual and professional life of Jammu and Kashmir.
