Islamic University of Science & Technology, Pulwama Summary
Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora is a public university in Jammu and Kashmir established through Act No. XVIII of 2005. The legislation was passed on 7 November 2005 and notified in the Jammu and Kashmir Government Gazette on 11 November 2005. The university began functioning in November 2005, while regular teaching programmes started in July 2006. Located at Awantipora in Pulwama district, around 30 kilometres south of Srinagar, IUST combines a modern university campus with a distinctive setting in the Kashmir Valley. Its academic structure has expanded across engineering and technology, sciences, health sciences, humanities, social sciences, management and other interdisciplinary areas. The university is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Sections 2(f) and 12(B), while relevant technical and nursing programmes operate with approvals from professional bodies such as AICTE and the Indian Nursing Council. IUST’s institutional model emphasizes teaching, research, innovation and community engagement rather than limiting itself to classroom instruction. Its engineering and science programmes support laboratory and technology-based learning, while social sciences and humanities broaden the university’s engagement with regional and national development issues. The institution has also pursued partnerships and outreach initiatives intended to connect academic expertise with local communities, entrepreneurship and skill development. Research in a Himalayan region creates opportunities to address questions involving environment, natural resources, disaster resilience, health, technology and socio-economic development. IUST has progressively added academic schools, programmes and research capacity since its first teaching session, transforming from a newly established university into a multidisciplinary institution serving students from Jammu and Kashmir and beyond. Its location, broad academic scope and emphasis on applied knowledge position it as an important component of the Union Territory’s higher-education, research and professional-training landscape. Its multidisciplinary structure creates opportunities for engineering, science, health and social-science perspectives to meet around problems relevant to Kashmir communities.
