Sardar Beant Singh State University is a public state university in Gurdaspur, Punjab, with a strong technical-education lineage. Its institutional history began in 1995 with Beant College of Engineering and Technology, created by the Punjab Government to provide engineering education in the state's border region. That predecessor developed academic departments, laboratories, workshops and campus facilities over more than two decades before the state converted it into a university. In the 2011-12 academic period the institution moved into a broader technical-campus phase, further widening its academic and administrative scope. Punjab Act No. 9 of 2021 established Sardar Beant Singh State University by upgrading the former engineering college, with the university coming into effect from 1 April 2021. The change from college to state university allowed the institution to build on its existing engineering base while developing a wider portfolio across engineering, sciences, management and related fields. The university received recognition under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act in May 2021, confirming its place within the national university system and its authority to award recognised degrees in accordance with applicable law. Its campus on National Highway 15 at Gurdaspur retains the infrastructure and technical culture of the predecessor institution, including academic buildings, laboratories, hostels and student-support facilities. The university has a particularly important geographic role because Gurdaspur is a border district where access to specialised technical higher education has long been a policy concern. Rather than starting as a newly built university without institutional memory, SBSSU inherited faculty experience, programmes and facilities from a government engineering college with roots in the mid-1990s. Its present identity therefore combines continuity in technical education with the broader academic authority and development potential of a Punjab state university. This evolution from government engineering college to technical campus and then state university is the defining feature of SBSSU's institutional profile.
