Kakatiya University is a state public university based at Vidyaranyapuri in Hanamkonda-Warangal, Telangana. The university was established on 19 August 1976, but its academic roots began earlier with the Post-Graduate Centre of Osmania University at Warangal. That centre started in 1968 with four departments—Telugu, English, Chemistry and Mathematics—and gradually expanded as additional subjects were introduced. Physics, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, Public Administration and Economics were among the disciplines added during the centre's development. Pharmacy also became part of the academic profile when a B.Pharmacy course started by Osmania University was shifted to the Warangal centre in 1975. The upgrading of this postgraduate centre into Kakatiya University in 1976 gave the region an independent university with responsibility for teaching, research and affiliation. Located in the historic Warangal area associated with the Kakatiya dynasty, the university developed a broad academic structure covering arts, sciences, commerce and business management, education, engineering, law, pharmaceutical sciences and social sciences. Its campus supports university departments, laboratories, library resources, research supervision, student services and residential facilities, while affiliated and constituent colleges extend its reach beyond the main campus. Kakatiya University's role has been especially important in widening access to postgraduate education and research in the northern Telangana region. The institution combines direct university teaching with examination and affiliation functions and supports doctoral work across multiple disciplines. Its evolution from a small postgraduate centre with four departments to a multidisciplinary public university illustrates the expansion of regional higher education in Telangana during the decades after independence. The university grew in a region shaped by Warangal's strong historical and cultural identity, and its academic expansion eventually extended well beyond the initial postgraduate departments. Today its teaching, research and affiliation functions span multiple faculties, giving it an enduring role in higher education across northern Telangana today.
