KALOJI NARAYANA RAO UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES Summary
Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) is the state health sciences university of Telangana, headquartered at Warangal. It was established by the Government of Telangana in 2014 under the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences Act following the formation of the new state. The university was created by adapting the existing health-university legal framework so that Telangana could independently regulate, coordinate and develop medical and allied health sciences education. KNRUHS began functioning academically from the 2016–17 session in a renovated block on the Kakatiya Medical College campus. A dedicated administrative complex was subsequently developed in Warangal; its foundation stone was laid in August 2016 and the new administrative building was inaugurated in June 2021. The university is named after Kaloji Narayana Rao, the Telangana poet, freedom fighter, activist and Padma Vibhushan recipient whose public life was closely associated with social justice and service. KNRUHS functions as the apex university for affiliated health-sciences institutions in Telangana. Its academic and regulatory responsibilities extend across medicine, dentistry, nursing, physiotherapy, AYUSH systems, allied health sciences and other health-professional programmes, including undergraduate, postgraduate, super-specialty, diploma and doctoral pathways. The university manages affiliation, admissions processes, examinations, academic regulation and certification while also encouraging research and professional standards. Its role connects medical education with the state's broader healthcare system because the professionals trained through affiliated institutions serve hospitals, clinics, public-health programmes and specialist services. KNRUHS therefore operates less like a single-campus teaching university and more like a statewide academic framework for health-professions education, quality oversight and healthcare-oriented research. Named in honour of poet and public figure Kaloji Narayana Rao, the university serves as Telangana's coordinating institution for health-sciences education. Its affiliation, examination and certification responsibilities connect medical, dental, nursing, AYUSH, physiotherapy and allied-health institutions within a single statewide academic framework focused on health-professional training.
