University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur Summary
The University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur is a state agricultural university serving the north-eastern part of Karnataka. Although the university is relatively young, Raichur has a long agricultural-research tradition. An Agricultural Research Station was established in the region in 1932 during the Hyderabad State period to study dryland farming. Raichur later became an important research and teaching centre under the University of Agricultural Sciences system, and the local agricultural college and research infrastructure expanded over several decades. The Government of Karnataka eventually created a separate university at Raichur to address the distinctive farming systems of the region. The university’s jurisdiction is associated with districts in north-eastern Karnataka where agriculture ranges from dryland production to large irrigated command areas. Major irrigation projects such as Tungabhadra, Upper Krishna, and Karanja shape the regional production environment. Crops include cereals, pulses, oilseeds, cotton, and horticultural commodities, creating research needs in water management, crop improvement, soil fertility, plant protection, mechanization, and climate-resilient farming. UAS Raichur follows the agricultural-university model of integrating education, research, and extension. Its teaching programmes are supported by research stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, extension activities, and field laboratories that connect scientific work with farmer needs. The Raichur campus had already developed postgraduate teaching before the separate university was formed, giving the institution a substantial academic base from the beginning. Its creation strengthened regional decision-making and allowed research priorities to be aligned more closely with the semi-arid and irrigated production systems of north-eastern Karnataka. Today the university’s role extends beyond degree education to varietal development, crop-management recommendations, farm technologies, extension training, and collaboration with government and national agricultural institutions. This regional focus makes UAS Raichur an important public knowledge centre for agriculture in one of Karnataka’s major farming zones. Its regional focus supports practical solutions for both dryland and irrigated farming systems.
