ASSAM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UNIVERSITY Summary
Assam Science and Technology University is a state university in Guwahati created to coordinate science and technology higher education across Assam. It was established on 4 January 2010 under the Assam Science and Technology University Act, 2009, and the state government brought the Act into force through notification in February 2010. The university was designed for engineering, technology, pharmacy, architecture, management, computer applications and basic sciences. Its responsibilities include regulation of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, examination systems, academic standards, research development and affiliation of institutions within its statutory scope. Unlike a single-campus general university, ASTU’s influence extends across a network of government and private technical and professional colleges in Assam. This statewide role enables common academic rules and degree standards across different institutions. The university also promotes postgraduate education and research in identified thrust areas and has developed its own academic and research initiatives. Its statutory objectives include research and development activities, creation of knowledge resources and stronger science-and-technology capacity for the state. Engineering and professional curricula are organized through regulations that define credits, progression, examinations and degree requirements. The university’s institutional development has included periodic revisions to its Act, regulations and statutes as the technical-education system evolved. Its First Statutes provided a more detailed governance framework for administration and academic bodies. ASTU also participates in quality and capacity-building initiatives designed to strengthen technical education and research. The university’s location in Guwahati places it within Assam’s principal higher-education and technology hub, while its affiliating reach serves institutions elsewhere in the state. Assam Science and Technology University is therefore best understood as both a university and a statewide technical academic framework: it links professional colleges through common standards, conducts examinations and awards degrees, promotes research, and develops advanced science and technology education in areas relevant to Assam and the North-Eastern region.
