SRIMANTA SANKARADEVA UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES, GUWAHATI Summary
Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences is Assam's dedicated public health-sciences university, headquartered at Narakasur Hill Top, Bhangagarh, Guwahati. The institution was established in 2009 under the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences Act, 2007 to create a common academic and regulatory framework for health-professional education across the state. Its jurisdiction extends throughout Assam, and its central responsibility is to promote uniform standards in the different faculties of health sciences. That statewide mandate makes the university important not only as an examining and affiliating body but also as a coordinating institution connecting medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, allied-health and other professional education with common academic expectations. The university's mission emphasizes an intellectual and academic environment in which different health disciplines can exchange knowledge, collaborate in research and build links with centres of excellence in India and abroad. It also provides a platform for health professionals, planners, managers, biomedical scientists, social scientists, educators and researchers to interact across institutional boundaries. Because many of Assam's health-professional colleges are geographically dispersed, the university's examination, affiliation, curriculum and academic-governance functions help provide statewide coherence. Its location within Guwahati's major medical-education environment supports close contact with teaching hospitals and health institutions. The university therefore occupies a distinctive position in northeastern India: it is a specialized state university whose purpose is to coordinate, standardize and strengthen health-sciences education across an entire state rather than operate only as a single-campus teaching institution. Its creation responded to the need for consistent academic standards across a rapidly expanding network of health-professional institutions in Assam. The university also supports postgraduate and research pathways that link professional training with the wider health needs of the region. It was established in 2009 under the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences Act, 2007. The university was created to promote uniform standards in health-sciences education.
