NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY AND JUDICIAL ACADEMY Summary
National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam is a state public law university located at Amingaon near Guwahati. The Government of Assam established the institution through the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009, responding to the need for a dedicated centre of advanced legal education and judicial training in the Northeast. The original statutory name used “School”; an amendment later replaced that word with “University,” producing the present NLUJAA identity. The university began its first academic session for the five-year integrated law degree in September 2011 from temporary facilities at the North Eastern Judicial Officers' Training Institute in Ulubari, Guwahati. It subsequently developed a permanent residential campus of about 50 acres at Amingaon on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, which was formally inaugurated in March 2017. NLUJAA offers the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.), one-year LL.M. and Ph.D. programmes, combining professional legal training with research and interdisciplinary study. Its statutory design also incorporates the judicial-academy function, creating scope for continuing education and training connected with judges, advocates, government officials and other legal personnel. The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court serves as Chancellor, reinforcing the university's institutional relationship with the judiciary. NLUJAA is recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission framework and participates in the national consortium of law universities. Academic life includes mooting, legal research, clinical work, publications, seminars, student societies and engagement with issues particularly relevant to northeastern India. As the first National Law University established in the region, NLUJAA expanded access to specialized legal education while creating a residential academic institution capable of linking national legal scholarship with the constitutional, social and developmental concerns of Assam and the wider Northeast. Its judicial-academy component also supports continuing professional education alongside the university's degree and research programmes.
