Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Guwahati Summary
Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) is Assam's state open university and was established under the KKHSOU Act, 2005. The act was published in the Assam Gazette on 29 September 2005, creating a dedicated institution for open and distance higher education in the state. KKHSOU is named after scholar and educationist Krishna Kanta Handiqui and has become a major flexible-learning institution for Assam and the wider Northeast. The university received recognition from the former Distance Education Council in 2007 and was empowered by the national higher-education regulator in 2009 to award degrees under Section 22 of the regulator Act. Its programs include certificates, diplomas, bachelor's degrees, postgraduate degrees and doctoral study across humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, science, education, computing and other fields. The delivery system uses self-learning materials, study centers, counseling, audio-video content, digital platforms and online learner services. KKHSOU has a particularly important regional role because it was established as the only state open university serving the Northeast for many years. The university emphasizes access for learners in remote areas, working adults, women and other groups that benefit from flexible education. Its Guwahati base provides access to Assam's largest academic and administrative hub while learner-support networks extend services statewide. Research, open educational resources and digital content production have become increasingly visible parts of the institution's academic work. The university's open model also supports continuing education and skill development in addition to conventional degree study. KKHSOU continues adapting its academic and technological systems to changing national standards for open and online learning. Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Guwahati operates within Assam's higher-education framework and serves learners from the Guwahati region as well as students from other parts of India. Its academic model reflects the changing role of technology, flexible learning and professional development in contemporary higher education.
