Pragjyotishpur University Summary
Pragjyotishpur University is a private university in Guwahati, Assam, established through the Pragjyotishpur University Act, 2022. The institution came into legal existence on 17 October 2022 with enactment of Assam Act No. XLVI of 2022. Its name draws on the ancient term Pragjyotishpur, historically associated with the northeastern region and appearing in classical Indian literature, giving the university a deliberately rooted regional and cultural identity. The university describes its academic philosophy through the ideas of knowledge, wisdom and truth and aligns its development with the multidisciplinary direction of the National Education Policy 2020. Formal undergraduate teaching began on 1 September 2023 for the maiden academic session. The university has organized its academic expansion through schools of excellence, with honours and integrated postgraduate pathways alongside emerging professional fields. Pharmaceutical sciences have also formed part of the planned professional portfolio, subject to relevant regulatory approval. Located in Guwahati, the university is positioned at a major educational and economic gateway to Northeast India. Its early institutional strategy combines liberal and scientific learning, research, innovation and regional cultural awareness rather than copying a narrowly specialized professional-college model. Because it is a new university, the most meaningful milestones are statutory establishment, academic launch and the gradual creation of schools, programmes and research systems. Pragjyotishpur University's first years therefore reflect a planned transition from legislation in 2022 to active undergraduate teaching and multidisciplinary expansion from 2023 onward.
