Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, Madhepura Summary
Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University (BNMU) is a state public university headquartered at Laloo Nagar in Madhepura, Bihar. It came into existence on 10 January 1992 and was named after the socialist leader Bhupendra Narayan Mandal. The university was established within the statutory framework of the Bihar universities system to expand access to higher education in the Kosi region, an area with a large rural population and historically limited access to university-level institutions. BNMU’s territorial jurisdiction extends across Madhepura, Saharsa and Supaul districts. Its structure combines university postgraduate departments with constituent and affiliated colleges distributed across these districts. The university’s official information lists conventional postgraduate teaching at its campuses, while the South Campus includes the Faculty of Education and the Department of Library and Information Science. It also supervises undergraduate, professional and teacher-education programmes delivered through its college network. The university uses departmental councils and departmental research councils within its academic administration and supports doctoral study under UGC regulations. Research activity includes projects and collaborations involving universities, national institutes, nongovernmental organizations and industry, and university departments have received support from agencies such as UGC, DST and BARC. Skill-development activity has also been organized through postgraduate departments. BNMU plays an important regional role because its jurisdiction includes districts along Bihar’s northeastern border belt and serves students from predominantly rural communities. The university’s constituent-college network includes institutions in Madhepura, Saharsa and Supaul, while its affiliated system includes general degree, law and teacher-education colleges. Its institutional character is therefore shaped by a combination of campus-based postgraduate education, research administration, examinations, affiliation and broad regional access to higher education. The university’s border-region location also attracts students from nearby areas beyond Bihar, while its large constituent and affiliated network distributes university education across towns and rural centres. Centralized examinations and digital student services support this dispersed academic structure.
