AL-KARIM UNIVERSITY Summary
Al-Karim University is a private university in Katihar, Bihar, established in 2018 under the Bihar Private Universities Act, 2013. The university grew from the long-standing work of Al-Karim Educational Trust and Katihar Medical College. The trust was established in 1986 in response to the need for stronger education and healthcare infrastructure in the Katihar and Seemanchal region, and Katihar Medical College followed in 1987. Katihar Medical College developed over three decades before becoming part of the university. Teaching for the first MBBS cohort began in 1988, affiliation processes advanced through the following years, and the college built hospital, academic and postgraduate medical infrastructure. The medical college was inducted into Al-Karim University when the university was established in 2018, giving the new institution a substantial clinical and professional foundation from its first year. The university expanded beyond medicine into allied health sciences, nursing, pharmacy, information technology, management, library science and related job-oriented programs. UGC recognition followed in 2019. New academic programs were introduced in 2019 and 2020, broadening access for students in Katihar and surrounding districts while retaining healthcare as the institution’s principal strength. Clinical education is supported by the teaching hospital associated with Katihar Medical College. The university also maintains a strong community-service role, including healthcare support for underserved populations and relief activity in a region affected by seasonal flooding. Research and postgraduate medical education form important parts of the academic environment. Al-Karim University’s institutional identity therefore combines two histories: a medical-college legacy beginning in 1987 and a university structure created in 2018. This continuity allows the university to offer modern multidisciplinary professional education while remaining closely tied to its original mission of improving healthcare and educational opportunity in northeastern Bihar and the wider Seemanchal region. The campus setting also enables medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied-health learners to interact within one institutional environment.
