PATLIPUTRA UNIVERSITY, PATNA Summary
Patliputra University is a public state university in Patna, Bihar, established on 18 March 2018 to reorganise and strengthen higher education across Patna and Nalanda districts. The Government of Bihar formalised the new university through its 2018 order, and colleges in the two districts were brought under Patliputra University’s jurisdiction except those continuing with Patna University. This gave the new institution a large academic base from the beginning rather than requiring it to build an affiliated system gradually. The university’s network includes twenty-five constituent colleges, government women’s colleges, minority colleges and a substantial number of affiliated institutions. Patliputra University therefore functions both as an affiliating authority and as a developing postgraduate and research university. Its university-level postgraduate departments cover a broad range of subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, psychology, sociology, political science, history, economics, geography, commerce and management, languages, home science, music and philosophy. Several departments currently operate through established constituent colleges in Patna, allowing the university to use existing academic infrastructure while its own institutional systems continue to develop. Governance is organised through statutory bodies such as the Academic Council and Syndicate under the Bihar State Universities framework. The university’s headquarters is at Old Bypass Road, Kankarbagh, Patna, placing it within the state capital’s large higher-education environment. Its student population is drawn widely from Patna, Nalanda and surrounding areas, and the affiliated system includes general degree, law, education and vocational institutions. Since 2018, Patliputra University has focused on creating a unified academic and examination framework for a diverse college network while expanding postgraduate teaching, doctoral research and student services. Its significance lies in bringing a large group of colleges under a dedicated regional university and creating a platform for more locally responsive academic planning in two of Bihar’s most important educational districts.
