Bihar University of Health Sciences Summary
Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS), Patna is a state public university created to bring health-science education in Bihar under a common affiliating and academic framework. It was established with effect from 1 July 2022 by the Government of Bihar through the Bihar University of Health Sciences Act, 2021. The university’s headquarters are in Patna and its territorial jurisdiction extends across the entire state. BUHS was created to affiliate health-science colleges and institutions that had previously been attached to conventional universities. Its statutory purpose is to promote systematic and uniform instruction, teaching, training and research across modern medicine and Indian systems of medicine. The university’s affiliation portfolio therefore includes medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and AYUSH institutions, depending on the programme and regulatory approvals of the relevant professional councils. The university provides a centralized academic structure for examinations, results, registration, affiliation and degree administration across a large and varied health-education network. Government and eligible trust- or society-run institutions can come under the university’s affiliation system in accordance with the Act and university rules. The result is a specialized university framework focused entirely on professional health education rather than on general arts and science disciplines. BUHS operates from Gyan Parisar at Mithapur in Patna. Its statewide jurisdiction is important because Bihar’s medical and allied-health institutions are geographically dispersed and subject to multiple professional regulatory standards. The university is intended to improve uniformity in curricula, examinations and academic administration while allowing specialist colleges to focus on clinical teaching and professional training. BUHS therefore functions as the central state-level academic authority connecting health-science institutions across Bihar through a common university system. A specialized health university also allows professional colleges to follow a common university calendar while remaining subject to the standards of bodies governing medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and AYUSH education.
