BIHAR ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY Summary
Bihar Animal Sciences University (BASU) is a state university headquartered in Patna and dedicated to veterinary, dairy, fisheries and allied animal sciences. It was established through Bihar Act No. 15 of 2016, notified in the Bihar Gazette on 29 August 2016, and became operational on 13 June 2017 with the appointment of its first Vice-Chancellor. The university was created by reorganizing animal-science institutions that had previously been part of Bihar Agricultural University. Two established Patna institutions formed the initial academic core: Bihar Veterinary College and the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology. These units were transferred to BASU when the new university became operational. A College of Fisheries was subsequently established in 2018, widening the university’s teaching and research mandate from veterinary and dairy sciences to fisheries education. BASU’s mission covers professional education, clinical and field-based training, research, livestock development, dairy technology, fisheries and extension. The university’s wider research structure includes animal-health and production facilities, livestock-related research stations and outreach units intended to connect university science with farmers, livestock owners, dairy producers and rural communities. Veterinary education is supported by clinical training and animal-health services, while dairy and fisheries programmes emphasize processing, production systems and applied technology. The university’s specialized structure distinguishes it from general universities in Bihar. Its teaching is concentrated on animal production and health, dairy science, fisheries and associated biological and technological disciplines. By bringing veterinary, dairy and fisheries institutions under one state university, BASU created a unified framework for professional degrees, postgraduate and doctoral research, extension and sector-specific innovation. Its location in Patna also places it close to major state departments and livestock-development institutions. Because its constituent institutions include professional colleges with long histories of their own, BASU combines inherited academic traditions with a newer university-level system for specialized animal-science governance.
