Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana Summary
Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) is Punjab's specialist state university for veterinary, animal, dairy, fisheries and related biosciences, headquartered in Ludhiana. It was created by Punjab Act No. 16 of 2005, notified on 9 August 2005, and began functioning on 21 April 2006. The university was formed by carving out the College of Veterinary Science and associated animal-science and farm facilities from Punjab Agricultural University. Its institutional roots extend further back to 1969, when the veterinary college at Ludhiana was established after a section of faculty was shifted from the College of Veterinary Science at Hisar. GADVASU's academic structure now includes veterinary science, dairy and food science technology, fisheries, animal biotechnology and additional veterinary education at Rampura Phul. This multidisciplinary organisation reflects the practical links among animal health, livestock production, milk and food systems, aquatic resources, biotechnology and public health. The university's mandate extends beyond degree education to research, continuing professional education and the development and transfer of technologies for livestock owners and allied industries. Regional Research and Training Centres and Krishi Vigyan Kendras help connect university expertise with farmers and field-level needs in Punjab. Teaching veterinary hospitals, farms and laboratory facilities give students direct exposure to diagnosis, treatment, production systems and animal management. Research programmes address animal productivity, disease, breeding, nutrition, biotechnology, dairy technology, fisheries and other issues relevant to the state's livestock economy. The university also supports postgraduate and doctoral specialization, helping produce advanced professionals for government services, academia, research institutions and animal-based industries. Its Ludhiana location maintains a strong connection with Punjab's agricultural and dairy economy and with the wider research environment originally developed around Punjab Agricultural University. GADVASU's specialist identity is reinforced by the integration of education, research and extension rather than treating these as separate functions.
