Anand Agricultural University, Anand Summary
Anand Agricultural University is a state agricultural university headquartered at Anand in Gujarat. It came into existence on 1 May 2004 under the Gujarat Agricultural Universities Act, 2004, when the former Gujarat Agricultural University was reorganized into four regionally focused agricultural universities. Although the university itself dates from 2004, its academic heritage is much older. Agricultural education and research at Anand developed from initiatives associated with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and K. M. Munshi, followed by the creation of the Institute of Agriculture and the B. A. College of Agriculture. Additional institutions in dairy science and veterinary science strengthened Anand’s role as a centre for agricultural and allied education before the formation of the present university. The university integrates teaching, research and extension across agriculture, dairy science, veterinary and animal sciences, agricultural engineering, food processing and allied disciplines. Its jurisdiction is centered on the agro-climatic conditions of central Gujarat, and its research network includes stations working on crop improvement, production systems, livestock, horticulture and resource management. When Anand Agricultural University was created, colleges, research stations and extension centres from the predecessor Gujarat Agricultural University were transferred into the new institution. This gave it an established field network from the beginning rather than requiring the university to build every unit from scratch. Research stations such as Dhandhuka also pre-date the university and demonstrate how the present institution inherited decades of location-specific agricultural work. Extension programmes connect university scientists with farmers through advisory services, training, demonstrations and field activities. The university’s identity is therefore based on both continuity and specialization: it preserves a long regional tradition of agricultural education while operating as a modern university organized for central Gujarat. Its academic environment combines degree programmes with laboratories, farms, research stations and extension institutions, allowing students and researchers to work directly with agricultural production systems and rural development needs.
