BANDA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY, BANDA Summary
Banda University of Agriculture and Technology is a state agricultural university established at Banda in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. It came into existence on 2 March 2010 under the Uttar Pradesh agricultural university legal framework to address the distinctive local farming, natural-resource and rural-development challenges of Bundelkhand. The university has jurisdiction across seven districts: Banda, Chitrakoot, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Lalitpur and Jalaun. Its mandate follows the agricultural-university model of integrating teaching, research and extension so that classroom education, scientific investigation and field-level support to farmers operate as connected functions. The campus occupies approximately 948 acres near the Banda–Mahoba bypass, with land divided between institutional infrastructure and research or instructional farm use. The university is authorized to maintain colleges in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Home Science or Community Science, Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, and Agricultural Engineering and Technology. Its programmes are therefore designed around the production, management and sustainability needs of agriculture and allied sectors rather than a general multidisciplinary curriculum. Research is particularly relevant to Bundelkhand’s semi-arid environment, where water management, crop resilience, soil health, horticulture, forestry, livestock and farm technologies have direct regional importance. Extension activity connects university expertise with farmers through field demonstrations, advisory programmes and Krishi Vigyan Kendra networks operating within its jurisdiction. The institutional governance structure includes a Board of Management, Academic Council, Boards of Studies, Finance Committee and research and extension advisory bodies. This organization reflects the land-grant style model used by agricultural universities in India. For students, BUAT offers professional agricultural education in a setting where teaching can be directly linked with experimental farms, laboratories and local production systems. Its defining contribution is the attempt to combine higher education with applied research and extension specifically for the socio-economic and agro-climatic conditions of Bundelkhand. Field-based learning remains central.
