Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur Summary
Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) is a public state university in Andhra Pradesh established in 1976 and located on a large campus along National Highway 16 between Vijayawada and Guntur. The university grew from the demand for expanded postgraduate education in the southern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. An Andhra University postgraduate extension centre at Nallapadu in Guntur district preceded the university, creating an academic base from which Nagarjuna University emerged in 1976. The institution was inaugurated on 11 September 1976 by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. It was named after the Buddhist philosopher Acharya Nagarjuna, whose intellectual legacy is strongly associated with the wider region. ANU developed into a multidisciplinary teaching, research and affiliating university with university colleges, professional programmes and a substantial network of affiliated colleges. Its academic fields include arts, sciences, commerce, management, education, law, engineering, pharmacy and research disciplines. The university’s 300-acre campus houses teaching departments, laboratories, library facilities, hostels, sports infrastructure and administrative services. ANU subsequently expanded both conventional postgraduate education and professional study, including law, management, computer applications, engineering and pharmacy. The Department of Law, for example, began regular LL.B. teaching in September 1979. The university celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 2001, marking twenty-five years of institutional development. ANU is recognized by the University Grants Commission and has undergone successive cycles of quality assessment by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Its institutional role extends beyond the main campus because affiliated colleges deliver a wide range of undergraduate and professional programmes under the university system. Acharya Nagarjuna University therefore combines the functions of a campus-based multidisciplinary university with those of a large regional affiliating and degree-awarding institution serving coastal Andhra Pradesh. Its Vijayawada–Guntur corridor location and affiliation system give ANU a regional role, linking main-campus research and postgraduate teaching with undergraduate and professional education in affiliated colleges.
