ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE VISHWAVIDYALAYA Summary
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya is a state university in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, established originally as Bilaspur Vishwavidyalaya. The institution was created through Chhattisgarh Act No. 07 of 2012 following a Gazette notification dated 3 February 2012 and came into existence in June 2012. Its present name was adopted in 2018 in memory of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The university combines direct teaching through university departments with a substantial affiliating role for colleges in the Bilaspur region. Its academic jurisdiction has historically included colleges across districts such as Bilaspur, Mungeli, Korba, Janjgir-Champa and Raigarh, making it an important examination and degree-awarding institution for a wide part of northern and central Chhattisgarh. University teaching departments cover fields including computer science and applications, commerce and financial studies, food processing and technology, hotel management and hospitality, microbiology and bioinformatics, and yoga. Affiliated colleges extend the academic range further across arts, science, commerce, law, education and research. The university initially operated from the Old High Court Building near Gandhi Chowk in Bilaspur and later developed a campus at Koni, an educational area outside the city. Land allotted at Koni enabled the institution to plan a dedicated university campus rather than remain dependent on temporary administrative premises. The university’s role therefore has two connected dimensions: providing specialized teaching and research directly through its own departments, and regulating academic programmes, examinations and degrees for a broad college network. Its creation expanded state-university capacity after the reorganization of higher education in Chhattisgarh. For students, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya represents a regional public university whose identity is shaped by both campus-based professional and interdisciplinary study and its responsibility for affiliated colleges serving multiple districts around Bilaspur. The Koni campus development also gives the university room for dedicated teaching, research and administrative infrastructure beyond its original premises.
