Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology, Kanpur Summary
Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology is a state agricultural university headquartered in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with institutional roots extending to agricultural education established in the city in the early twentieth century. The present university was created on 1 March 1975 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh through the merger of the Government Agricultural College, Kanpur, and the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Mathura. Its historical lineage includes the Government Agriculture College that developed from an agricultural training institution established at Kanpur in 1906. The university is named after freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad and is dedicated to education, research and extension in agriculture and allied sciences. Its academic structure includes colleges and programmes in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, home science or community science, agricultural engineering and technology, and related disciplines. The university has also developed constituent facilities outside Kanpur, including the agricultural engineering and technology college at Etawah and an agriculture college serving the Lakhimpur Kheri area. Research and extension are central to its mandate because the institution serves farming systems across different agro-climatic conditions of Uttar Pradesh. Faculty and research units work on crop improvement, soil and water management, plant protection, horticulture, agricultural engineering, livestock-linked systems and rural technology. The university’s development reflects the evolution of agricultural higher education from a single teaching college into a multi-campus university with undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral responsibilities. Its historic Kanpur base connects modern agricultural science with more than a century of organized agricultural instruction in the region. Through teaching, field research, technology transfer and farmer-oriented extension, the university functions as both an academic institution and a practical agricultural-development organization serving farmers, students and public agencies. The university’s agricultural mission is especially important in Uttar Pradesh because its teaching and research directly connect scientific training with regional crop production, farm mechanization and rural livelihoods.
