Karnataka Vetrinary, Animal & Fisheries Science University, Nandinagar Summary
Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bidar is a specialized state public university responsible for education, research and extension in veterinary, animal, dairy and fisheries sciences across Karnataka. The university was created under Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004 and developed as a separate institution to give these sectors a dedicated academic and research system rather than keeping them within a broader agricultural-university structure. Its headquarters are at Nandinagar, Bidar, and its institutional network includes constituent veterinary colleges, the College of Fisheries at Mangaluru, dairy-science education and other specialized units. Veterinary colleges at Bidar, Bengaluru, Shivamogga, Hassan and other locations have supported the university’s statewide teaching and clinical role. The university’s mandate is explicitly rural and farmer oriented: alongside degree education, it conducts research on animal health, livestock production, dairy systems, fisheries, breeding, nutrition, disease management and technologies relevant to farmers and allied industries. Extension education is an essential third component, helping transfer research findings and practical techniques to livestock owners, fish farmers, veterinary professionals and rural communities. Undergraduate professional programmes are complemented by postgraduate and doctoral education in specialized veterinary, animal, dairy and fisheries disciplines. The university is governed through academic and research bodies that coordinate teaching, research and extension priorities across its colleges and institutes. Its creation strengthened the institutional identity of animal and fisheries sciences within Karnataka and allowed sector-specific planning of laboratories, clinical services, field research and professional training. KVAFSU’s distinctive contribution lies in integrating university education with applied biological science, animal healthcare, food-production systems and rural livelihoods across the state. Its constituent-college model allows professional education to be distributed across different parts of Karnataka while common university research priorities connect clinical veterinary work, farm production, aquatic resources and food systems with the practical needs of rural communities. This integrated model supports sector-specific professional standards.
