KAMDHENU UNIVERSITY, GANDHINAGAR Summary
Kamdhenu University is a Gujarat state public university dedicated to veterinary, animal, dairy and fisheries sciences. Its statutory foundation was created through the Kamdhenu University Act, 2009, enacted to establish a specialized teaching and affiliating university for the development of animal sciences and allied sectors in Gujarat. The legislation envisioned an institution that would integrate professional education, research, extension and dissemination of technical knowledge in veterinary science, animal husbandry, dairy science, fisheries and connected fields. The Act received gubernatorial assent in July 2009, and the university's institutional development accelerated in 2014 with the appointment of its founder Vice-Chancellor. Kamdhenu University now operates through a distributed network of constituent colleges and academic units across Gujarat rather than being limited to a single discipline or campus. Its units include colleges of veterinary science and animal husbandry, dairy science and fisheries science, as well as animal-husbandry polytechnics. The university organizes its work around three closely connected pillars: education, research and extension. Students receive professional and laboratory-based training, researchers work on animal health, production, dairy, fisheries and related rural-economy challenges, and extension teams transfer scientific knowledge to livestock keepers, fishers and rural communities. Research stations and extension centres broaden the university's field presence. The institution also supports postgraduate education, research supervision, animal-health camps, farmer training and technical publications. Kamdhenu University's specialized mandate reflects the economic importance of livestock, dairy and fisheries to Gujarat. By bringing these sectors into a single university system, it creates an integrated framework for producing professionals, generating applied research and supporting farmers and animal-resource industries throughout the state. Unlike a single-campus university, Kamdhenu operates through a network of colleges and polytechnics specializing in veterinary, dairy and fisheries education. Its extension programmes, animal-health outreach and farmer-oriented activities connect teaching and research with Gujarat's livestock, milk, fisheries and rural-production sectors, making field engagement central to its mandate.
