Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pardesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur Summary
Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya is a state agricultural university at Palampur in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, devoted to education, research and extension in agriculture and allied sciences. Its institutional history began with the College of Agriculture established at Palampur in 1966 as a constituent college of Punjab Agricultural University. Following reorganization of the region, the college became part of Himachal Pradesh University and progressively developed postgraduate and doctoral teaching. A separate agricultural university was established at Palampur on 1 November 1978, creating an institution focused on the mountain farming systems and rural needs of Himachal Pradesh. The university later adopted its present name in honour of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar. Academic work spans agriculture, veterinary and animal sciences, basic sciences, community science and related fields, with programmes extending from undergraduate study to doctoral research. Because Himachal Pradesh has highly varied elevations, climates and farming systems, the university’s research responsibilities include hill crops, horticulture-linked production, livestock, soil and water management, plant protection and resource conservation. Its scientists work through the main campus and research stations positioned in different agro-climatic zones. Extension activities translate research into farmer training, demonstrations, advisory services and field-based technology transfer. The university’s agricultural mandate also includes breeding and evaluating crop varieties suitable for hill conditions and supporting sustainable use of natural resources. The College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and other constituent academic units broaden its work beyond crop agriculture. Palampur’s location in the Kangra Valley gives the university direct access to diverse mountain-agriculture conditions and farming communities. The institution therefore combines a long educational lineage, specialized hill-agriculture research and a statewide extension role, making it a central public institution for agricultural knowledge and human-resource development in Himachal Pradesh. Its hill-agriculture research must address altitude, fragmented holdings, rainfall variation and fragile mountain resources.
