Maharashi Markandeshwar University, Solan Summary
Maharishi Markandeshwar University, Kumarhatti-Solan is a private university in Himachal Pradesh established in 2010 under Act No. 22 of 2010. It is promoted by Maharishi Markandeshwar University Trust, whose educational journey began in the early 1990s under founder Tarsem Kumar Garg. The trust first established professional institutions at Mullana in Haryana before expanding its university model to the Himalayan region of Solan. MMU Solan began as an interdisciplinary university with programmes in engineering, technology, management, computer applications and science. Its profile later shifted strongly toward medical and health sciences. The university introduced MBBS education from the 2013–14 academic period and developed a medical college and teaching hospital, alongside nursing and physiotherapy institutes. This clinical infrastructure gives the university a substantial health-professions identity while retaining its origins in multidisciplinary professional education. The institution's history combines the older Maharishi Markandeshwar education trust with the 2010 Himachal Pradesh university. The sponsoring trust was founded in November 1993, and MM Engineering College at Mullana followed in 1995. The Solan university was then created as part of the trust's expansion and received UGC recognition for awarding degrees. Its campus at Kumarhatti provides teaching, clinical, laboratory and residential facilities. Over time, health sciences became a central focus, supported by a large multi-specialty teaching hospital and constituent medical, nursing and physiotherapy units. The university's Solan campus represents the Himachal Pradesh expansion of an education trust first developed in neighboring Haryana. Its transition from interdisciplinary professional education toward a strong medical and health-sciences profile is a defining feature. The trust's first major professional institution was MM Engineering College at Mullana, established in 1995. Medical education became a major focus with the introduction of MBBS study from 2013–14. Recognition phase — The university received UGC recognition for awarding degrees under the national framework.
