Its roots lie in the Himachal Agricultural College established at Solan in 1962, which later became part of Himachal Pradesh University and then the horticulture complex of Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya. The university combines education, research and extension from a Himalayan perspective. The university is located at Nauni, about 13 kilometres from Solan. It is recognized as a pioneering university devoted exclusively to horticulture and forestry. The main campus includes separate Colleges of Horticulture and Forestry. Additional constituent colleges operate at Neri in Hamirpur district and Thunag in Mandi district. Regional research stations and satellite stations extend work across different agro-climatic zones. Krishi Vigyan Kendras support farmer training and technology transfer. Research addresses temperate and subtropical fruits, vegetables, floriculture, forestry and natural-resource management. Climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable Himalayan farming are major contemporary research themes. The university has promoted natural farming and sustainable food-system approaches.
