DAU SHRI VASUDEV CHANDRAKAR KAMDHENU Summary
Dau Shri Vasudev Chandrakar Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya is a specialized state university in Chhattisgarh devoted to veterinary, animal, dairy and fisheries sciences. The university was established on 11 April 2012 following promulgation of the Chhattisgarh Kamdhenu Vishwavidyalaya Act, 2011. Headquartered in Durg, it was created to organize higher education, research and extension around livestock production, animal health, dairy technology, fisheries and allied rural livelihoods. Its academic system brings together professional colleges, research stations, centres and polytechnic-level units connected with animal and fisheries development. Veterinary education forms a central part of the university, with teaching and clinical training linked to animal-health services and livestock management. Dairy and fisheries education broaden the institution’s scope beyond veterinary medicine into food production, processing, aquaculture and enterprise development. Research priorities include infectious and zoonotic diseases, breeding strategies, food safety, animal nutrition, reproductive management and technologies intended to improve farm productivity and farmer income. Extension work is especially important because the university’s mandate connects academic research with livestock owners, dairy producers, fish farmers and field-level government services across Chhattisgarh. The university also conducts conferences, farmer-oriented programmes, alumni activities and convocations that connect its constituent academic units. Its name honours Dau Shri Vasudev Chandrakar, and its creation gave Chhattisgarh a dedicated university structure for sectors that had previously been distributed across agricultural and departmental institutions. DSVCKV’s institutional role is therefore highly applied: it trains veterinary and allied professionals, conducts problem-oriented research, supports disease control and breeding improvement, and transfers scientific practices to farmers and field agencies. This combination of professional education, laboratory research and rural extension distinguishes it from general state universities. Its specialist mandate links veterinary and animal sciences with dairy technology, fisheries, livestock production, zoonotic-disease research and farmer-oriented extension, making it distinct from a general multidisciplinary state university. Its extension activities connect university expertise with livestock owners and rural communities.
