Bihar Engineering University (BEU), Patna is a state public university created to provide a unified academic and affiliating framework for engineering and technical education across Bihar. The university was established under the Bihar Engineering University Act, 2021, published in the Bihar Gazette on 9 August 2021. Its jurisdiction extends across the entire state and encompasses government and eligible self-financing institutions in engineering and technology, architecture and planning, management and other areas defined within technical education. BEU’s statutory objectives emphasize science, engineering and technology, architecture, planning and management. The university is intended to coordinate curricula, examinations, affiliation, quality systems, research and industry linkages across its institutions. Its academic portfolio includes undergraduate engineering and architecture programmes, postgraduate technology and management programmes, and doctoral research. The university’s B.Tech framework covers both established branches and newer fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cyber security, VLSI, robotics, automation, mechatronics and other industry-oriented specializations. The university operates from Patna and provides centralized academic services for affiliated technical colleges. Its governance structure includes an Executive Council, Academic Council, Finance Committee and Examination Board as provided under its legal framework. BEU also publishes regulations for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral study and maintains systems for affiliation, examinations, student grievances and college information. The creation of BEU separated statewide engineering and technology affiliation from broader multi-disciplinary university structures. This gives technical institutions a dedicated university authority focused on curriculum modernization, examination consistency, research development and relationships with industry. Its statewide jurisdiction makes BEU an important coordinating institution for Bihar’s government engineering colleges and other technical institutions. The statewide model is especially important for engineering colleges because common regulations, examination schedules and degree standards can be coordinated through a single technical university.
