T.M. Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur Summary
Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) is a state public university in Bhagalpur, Bihar, established on 12 July 1960. It began as Bhagalpur University and was later renamed in honour of Tilka Manjhi, the eighteenth-century Adivasi leader remembered for resistance to British authority. The university developed as a major centre of higher education for eastern Bihar, serving students from Bhagalpur and adjoining districts through university departments, constituent colleges, affiliated colleges, and professional institutions. Official university information describes a broad academic structure covering humanities, social sciences, sciences, commerce, law, education, management, biotechnology, computer science, and vocational fields. Its institutional network includes teaching departments and research centres alongside constituent and affiliated colleges. The university campus in Bhagalpur provides the base for postgraduate teaching, research, examinations, and administration, while the affiliated-college system extends undergraduate access across the region. This combination makes TMBU both a teaching university and an important regional examining and affiliating authority. The institution has continued to develop quality-assurance and research structures over time. Its Internal Quality Assurance Cell was established in April 2009, and the university has engaged with NAAC accreditation processes while strengthening academic administration. Research activity extends across conventional disciplines as well as regionally relevant fields, and the university’s long history has produced a substantial alumni base in education, public service, law, science, and other professions. TMBU’s regional significance is especially strong because Bhagalpur is a major educational and commercial centre in eastern Bihar. More than six decades after its establishment, the university continues to balance a large public-access mission with postgraduate teaching and research. Its identity combines the legacy of the former Bhagalpur University with the symbolic name of Tilka Manjhi and a continuing responsibility to provide affordable higher education across the wider Bhagalpur region. Its regional college network extends university-supervised degree education beyond the main Bhagalpur campus.
