BANKURA UNIVERSITY, BANKURA Summary
Bankura University is a state-aided public university in West Bengal created to expand higher education in Bankura district and to develop teaching and research connected with the region’s social, cultural and economic context. The institution was established under the Bankura University Act, 2013, with the Governor’s assent published in the Kolkata Gazette, Extraordinary, on 6 January 2014. The university began its journey in 2014 and has developed from a new regional institution into a teaching and affiliating university with multiple campuses and academic departments. Its subject structure includes Bengali, English, Sanskrit, Santali, Education, History, Law, Philosophy, Political Science, Social Work, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Geography, among other areas. This mix gives the university a multidisciplinary base while maintaining a noticeable emphasis on language, culture, social science and the distinctive heritage of Bankura. The Department of History, established in 2014, explicitly incorporates regional history into its teaching and research approach. Bankura University also supports Santali-medium undergraduate education, reflecting the linguistic and tribal communities of the district. Its campuses are located at Purandarpur, Puabagan, Mithila and Chhandar, and the university affiliates colleges across Bankura district. The institution is recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission Act and has received NAAC accreditation with a B grade and CGPA of 2.4. Its academic mission includes postgraduate and doctoral education, undergraduate oversight through affiliated colleges, research, curriculum development and engagement with indigenous folk and cultural traditions. The university’s regional setting is especially important: Bankura is associated with Bishnupur’s temple culture, folk traditions, Dokra craft and major artists, providing a strong context for locally grounded scholarship. For students, Bankura University combines the access role of a district-focused state institution with postgraduate departments and research themes that connect broader academic disciplines to rural, tribal and cultural questions specific to western West Bengal.
