Gauhati University, Guwahati Summary
Gauhati University is Assam’s oldest university and one of the foundational institutions of higher education in Northeast India. It was incorporated under the Gauhati University Act, 1947 and began functioning on 26 January 1948 as an affiliating, teaching and residential university. Its creation followed decades of public campaigning for a university in Assam, supported by educationists, political leaders, student groups and widespread public fundraising. Krishna Kanta Handique became the founding Vice-Chancellor. The university initially operated from temporary facilities in central Guwahati with 18 affiliated colleges and eight postgraduate departments, before shifting to its permanent Jalukbari campus in 1955–56. Today its academic identity continues to combine campus teaching, research and a major affiliating role. The university’s motto is Vidyaya Sadhayeta, meaning achievement through learning. Mathematics and Statistics were among the earliest postgraduate academic units. Statistics traces its formal departmental history to 26 January 1948. Assamese language, history, culture, archaeology and regional studies remain major scholarly strengths. The Jalukbari campus became the permanent academic base in the mid-1950s. The university anthem Jilikaba Luitare Par was composed by Bhupen Hazarika. Gauhati University has long served as an affiliating university for colleges across Assam. The institution is a member of national and Commonwealth university associations. Research funding has historically come from national science, humanities and agricultural agencies. Its establishment is remembered as the outcome of a broad people’s movement for higher education in Assam. 22 May 1935 — University Day was observed across Assam to mobilize support. 1944 — Public fundraising intensified under leaders including Gopinath Bordoloi and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. 15 October 1947 — The Gauhati University Bill was placed before the Assam Assembly. 26 January 1948 — The Gauhati University Act came into force and the university began functioning. Its history remains inseparable from Assam’s twentieth-century movement to build an indigenous centre of advanced learning.
