DHARMASHASTRA NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY Summary
Dharmashastra National Law University is a state National Law University in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, established under the Madhya Pradesh Dharmashastra National Law University Act, 2018. The university was created as a specialized institution for advanced legal education, research, advocacy and public-law scholarship. It operates from the BRBRAITT campus in South Civil Lines, Jabalpur while development of its permanent campus proceeds. The university belongs to the Consortium of National Law Universities and participates in the common national admission system for its principal law programmes. Its flagship undergraduate programme is the integrated B.A., LL.B. (Honours), supported by postgraduate LL.M. and doctoral study. Academic work is structured around legal doctrine, interdisciplinary social-science study, research writing, mooting, internships and professional skills. The university has built specialized centres and academic activities that connect classroom law with contemporary regulatory, public-policy and justice questions. Governance developed through the university’s 2018 Act, followed by statutes, regulations and ordinances issued in 2020. These documents formalized academic bodies, programme rules, examinations and institutional administration. A specific Ph.D. ordinance adopted in 2022 further developed the research-degree framework. As a relatively young National Law University, DNLU has focused on creating library and digital legal-research resources, faculty recruitment, student societies, moot and advocacy activity, internships and external academic engagement. Its location in Jabalpur places it near the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s principal seat, giving legal education an important professional and judicial context. Dharmashastra National Law University’s institutional character is therefore defined by its specialized public-law mandate, national admissions framework, emerging research centres and the gradual construction of a full specialized NLU ecosystem in Madhya Pradesh. The university’s academic environment is shaped by mooting, legal-aid and research activities, while its proximity to the Madhya Pradesh High Court creates practical opportunities for students to observe litigation, advocacy and public-law institutions.
