Maharashtra National Law University, Aurangabad Summary
Maharashtra National Law University, Aurangabad is a state public law university created under the Maharashtra National Law University Act, 2014 to expand high-quality legal education in the Marathwada region. The institution, which now uses Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in its official identity, commenced operations on 16 March 2017 and began admitting students from the 2017–18 academic year through the Common Law Admission Test framework. Its establishment completed Maharashtra’s three-university national law university model alongside the institutions at Mumbai and Nagpur. The university’s academic profile is centered on legal education, professional formation, and research. Its integrated undergraduate law curriculum combines doctrinal legal study with humanities and social-science subjects so that students can examine law in its social, political, historical, and economic settings. Postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, certificate, and research activities extend this foundation into specialized areas of law and public policy. The university also supports research centres that engage with contemporary subjects such as comparative law, international law, constitutional questions, and other emerging legal fields. MNLU’s educational approach places importance on advocacy skills, legal reasoning, research writing, seminars, mooting, clinical learning, and exposure to the justice system. Its location in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar gives it a distinctive regional role while connecting students with the Bombay High Court’s bench in the city and the wider legal community of Marathwada. The university was conceived as an autonomous institution with a public mandate: to advance legal learning, strengthen research, develop socially responsible professionals, and contribute to law reform and access to justice. As its permanent academic infrastructure has developed, MNLU has continued building a national profile while retaining a clear commitment to serving the educational aspirations of its region. Its growing campus, student societies, legal research initiatives, and engagement with courts and practitioners help translate the university’s statutory objectives into a professional learning environment for future advocates, researchers, judges, and public-service professionals.
