Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur Summary
Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) is a public National Law University in Chhattisgarh established in 2003 and named after Justice Mohammed Hidayatullah, former Chief Justice of India and Vice-President of India. The Government of Chhattisgarh created the institution under the Hidayatullah National University of Law, Chhattisgarh Act, Act No. 10 of 2003. HNLU is the sixth institution in India's sequence of National Law Schools and was designed to provide intensive legal education, advanced research and professional training within a residential university environment. The university is included in the UGC list under Section 2(f), is eligible for central assistance under Section 12B, and is recognized by the Bar Council of India for legal education. Its academic structure centres on the integrated undergraduate law degree, postgraduate legal study and doctoral research, supported by mooting, clinical work, seminars, journals and research centres. The university's long-term academic planning has included Schools of Excellence covering juridical and social sciences, constitutional governance, international legal studies, corporate law and world trade, science and technology law, and administration of justice and clinical legal education. These themes support research in areas such as constitutional law, human rights, arbitration, trade and investment, intellectual property, environment, technology, criminal justice and access to justice. HNLU's campus in the Raipur region provides academic blocks, library and residential facilities intended for a full-time law-school community. The institution's motto, 'Dharma Sansthapanartham', expresses the idea of establishing the primacy of enduring legal and ethical values. Its name also connects the university with Justice Hidayatullah's distinguished judicial and constitutional career. Student academic life is shaped by advocacy competitions, research writing, legal-aid and clinical activities, conferences and specialised committees. The National Law University model allows students to combine doctrinal law with economics, political science, sociology and other supporting disciplines. Its academic work continues.
