Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur Summary
Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University is a public state university in Raipur and one of the foundational institutions of higher education in present-day Chhattisgarh. The university was created under Madhya Pradesh Act No. 13 of 1963, which came into force on 1 May 1964, and it began functioning in June 1964. It is named after Pt. Ravishankar Shukla, the first Chief Minister of reorganized Madhya Pradesh. Postgraduate teaching departments were inaugurated in 1965, establishing the university as more than an affiliating body and creating a direct base for advanced study and research. Over subsequent decades, the institution expanded across sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce, management, law and interdisciplinary fields. When Chhattisgarh became a separate state in 2000, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University emerged as one of the new state’s principal established universities, with an academic and affiliating role extending across a large region. Its Raipur campus supports university teaching departments, laboratories, library services, research centres, sports and student facilities. The university’s location in the state capital also places it close to administrative, cultural and research institutions, supporting collaboration and public engagement. Academic development has included postgraduate degrees, professional programs and doctoral research, while affiliated colleges broaden access to undergraduate education. The institution has particular regional relevance because Chhattisgarh includes large tribal and rural populations and diverse ecological and social contexts that shape research in science, environment, social development, languages and culture. The university’s long institutional history means several departments and research traditions developed before Chhattisgarh itself became a separate state. Successive phases of expansion have added specialized teaching, research and student-support structures to the original postgraduate departments opened in the 1960s. The university remains an important public institution for higher education in central India, linking established academic disciplines with regional research priorities. Its public mission remains closely tied to regional educational development.
