Kushabhau Thakre Patrakarita Avam Jansanchar Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur Summary
Kushabhau Thakre Patrakarita Avam Jansanchar Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur is a state public university created specifically for journalism, mass communication and related fields. The Government of Chhattisgarh established the university through Act No. 24 of 2004, giving the state a specialized institution focused on media education and communication studies. The university was inaugurated on 16 April 2005 by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and was subsequently recognized by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) in August 2005. It was named in memory of Kushabhau Thakre, whose public life and emphasis on social responsibility shaped the symbolic identity of the institution. The university later developed a dedicated campus at Kathadih, Raipur, which was inaugurated in 2010. Academic programs have grown beyond conventional reporting and editing to include electronic media, advertising and public relations, mass communication, media management, new media and other communication-oriented areas. The university describes its educational approach as a blend of professional practice, social commitment, cultural understanding and contemporary media skills. Its specialized structure allows journalism and communication to be treated as the central academic mission rather than as a single department within a general university. This creates scope for studios, production work, field reporting, media research and close engagement with changing communication technologies. The institution also supports research, doctoral work, seminars and professional interaction connected with media, society and public communication. As India's media environment has shifted from print and broadcast toward digital platforms and converged newsrooms, the university's curriculum and training environment have had to evolve accordingly. Its role remains distinctive within Chhattisgarh's public higher-education system because it links university-level scholarship with professional media education and communication practice. The campus environment is designed to support practical communication training alongside theory, ethics, research and social analysis. Ethics and public responsibility remain central themes.
