Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur Summary
Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur is a state agricultural university established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh on 1 October 1964 under Act No. 15 of 1964. Its creation formed part of India’s post-independence effort to build agricultural universities that combined teaching, research and extension on the land-grant model. The idea drew on the recommendations of the Radhakrishnan Commission and subsequent Indo-American teams that examined agricultural research and education during the 1950s. JNKVV was constituted by bringing together six government agriculture colleges, two veterinary science and animal husbandry colleges and 26 research stations, creating a large multi-campus agricultural system from the outset. The university was inaugurated in October 1964 by Indira Gandhi, then Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. JNKVV’s core mandate integrates three functions: educating agricultural professionals, conducting research relevant to Madhya Pradesh’s farming systems and transferring useful technologies to farmers. Its academic and research work addresses crop improvement, agronomy, soil and water management, plant protection, agricultural engineering, horticulture, natural resources and allied areas. Research stations and field units allow scientists to work across differing agro-climatic conditions, while extension activity connects university knowledge with farming communities through training, demonstrations, advisories and technology assessment. The university’s long history gives it an important role in the development of improved crop varieties and region-specific production practices. Its Jabalpur headquarters coordinates a wider network of colleges, research centres and Krishi Vigyan Kendras serving different parts of the state. By maintaining close links among classrooms, laboratories, experimental farms and farmers’ fields, JNKVV continues the integrated agricultural-university model on which it was founded, with productivity, sustainability, rural livelihoods and practical problem solving at the centre of its institutional mission. This combination of scientific research and field extension allows the university to test ideas under real farming conditions and refine recommendations for different regions of Madhya Pradesh.
