Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupathi Summary
Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University is Andhra Pradesh's specialized public university for veterinary, dairy and fishery sciences, headquartered in Tirupati. Established under Andhra Pradesh Act No. 18 of 2005, the university was created to strengthen education, research and extension in animal, dairy and fisheries sectors that are central to the state's rural economy. Its institutional roots are much older than the university itself. Veterinary education in the region developed through colleges at Rajendranagar, Bapatla and Gannavaram, while the Bapatla Veterinary College, started in 1955, was shifted to Tirupati in December 1957. Fisheries education expanded with the College of Fishery Science at Muthukur in 1991. During the golden-jubilee celebrations of the Tirupati veterinary college in 2004-05, the state announced a separate veterinary university. The Cabinet approved the proposal in March 2005, the establishing Act was passed that month, and the university was inaugurated on 15 July 2005. SVVU was formed by separating the veterinary, dairy and fishery faculties from Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University, giving the new institution an established network of colleges, laboratories, farms and extension units from the outset. Its academic work integrates professional education with animal-health research, livestock production, dairy technology, fisheries science and field extension. This teaching-research-extension model connects university laboratories directly with farmers, livestock owners, aquaculture producers and public veterinary services across Andhra Pradesh. The university operates through three principal faculties—Veterinary Science, Dairy Science and Fishery Science—giving it a multidisciplinary mandate within the animal and aquatic sciences. Its headquarters began functioning from Tirupati from 1 April 2006 after the initial transition from the former agricultural-university structure. SVVU is a public specialized university headquartered in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. It was established under Andhra Pradesh Act No. 18 of 2005. Fisheries education in the system includes the College of Fishery Science established at Muthukur in 1991.
