Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner Summary
Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, commonly known as RAJUVAS, is a public state university in Bikaner devoted to veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, livestock research, extension and allied sciences. It was constituted under the Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Act, 2010 and came into existence in May 2010. The university’s roots are substantially older because its principal College of Veterinary and Animal Science in Bikaner was founded in 1954 and became a major centre for veterinary education in Rajasthan. RAJUVAS is headquartered in the historic Ganga Avenue and Bijey Bhawan Palace complex, where the veterinary college and associated facilities occupy a large campus. Academic activity includes veterinary and animal science degree programs, postgraduate training, doctoral research and animal-husbandry diploma education. The university maintains constituent colleges, livestock research stations, advanced research centres and extension units serving farmers, livestock owners and animal-health professionals. Its mandate explicitly links teaching with scientific research and field extension so that new knowledge can improve livestock productivity, animal health and rural livelihoods. Clinical services and disease-diagnostic activity provide students with practical exposure while also supporting the state’s livestock sector. RAJUVAS therefore combines the functions of a professional university, research organization and agricultural-extension institution within Rajasthan’s public higher-education system. The university’s heritage campus includes Bijey Bhawan, a red-sandstone palace designed by Sir Swinton Jacob and built in 1927. Livestock research stations in different agro-climatic regions enable location-specific work on breeding, nutrition, management and animal production. Diploma institutes across Rajasthan contribute to the training of para-veterinary personnel who support field-level animal-health services. RAJUVAS is recognized within India’s veterinary-education system and works closely with national agricultural and veterinary frameworks. The institution continues to develop this role through public higher education, academic administration and student services. These functions together shape the university’s contemporary academic identity and public-service mission.
