Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner Summary
Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University is a specialized public agricultural university based in Bikaner, serving the farming systems of northwestern Rajasthan. The institution was established on 1 August 1987 as Rajasthan Agricultural University through an ordinance that was later enacted as Rajasthan Act No. 39 of 1987. Its mandate integrates agricultural education, research and extension, with a particular focus on production systems shaped by arid and semi-arid conditions, limited water resources and the crop-livestock economy of the region. Over time the university's territorial responsibilities changed as Rajasthan reorganized its agricultural-university system, while the Bikaner institution developed a more focused regional role. Its current jurisdiction covers Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunu and Sriganganagar districts. The university was later prefixed with the name of Swami Keshwanand, whose work linked education, rural development and social uplift. Academic and research activity is delivered through colleges, agricultural research stations, a research sub-station, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and the Agricultural Technology Information Centre. This network allows classroom teaching and postgraduate research to remain connected with field experiments, seed production, farm machinery, crop improvement, soil and water management and farmer training. Research stations at locations such as Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh predate the present university and contribute long-term regional data and expertise. SKRAU's distinctive role is therefore strongly place-based: it develops scientific knowledge and trained professionals for agriculture in some of India's most challenging dryland environments. The university’s extension network provides an institutional bridge between laboratory or station-based research and farmers across its six-district jurisdiction. Its academic mission is shaped by the need to improve productivity while conserving scarce natural resources in western Rajasthan. SKRAU is a public agricultural university headquartered in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The founding ordinance was later enacted as Rajasthan Act No. 39 of 1987. Its current jurisdiction includes Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, Jaisalmer, Jhunjhunu and Sriganganagar districts.
