Lala lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Summary
Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Hisar is Haryana's specialized state university for veterinary education, animal sciences, livestock research and extension. It came into existence on 1 December 2010 under Haryana Act No. 7 of 2010, which had been notified on 7 April that year. The university was named in memory of Lala Lajpat Rai, the freedom fighter and social reformer who had important personal and public links with Hisar. Although the university itself is relatively young, its academic lineage is much older. The College of Veterinary Sciences that became the core constituent institution has roots in the veterinary college shifted from Lahore after Partition and later developed within the Haryana agricultural-university system. When the new university was created, the College of Veterinary Sciences and College of Animal Sciences of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University were transferred to it, with the animal-sciences college merged into the veterinary college. LUVAS now provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in veterinary and animal sciences while conducting research relevant to livestock health, breeding, nutrition, production, disease control and public health. Its clinical and diagnostic services also support livestock owners and the animal-husbandry sector of Haryana. The university combines classroom teaching with laboratories, veterinary hospitals, farms, field research and extension activities, giving students direct exposure to animal health and production systems. Specialized veterinary universities play an important role in states with substantial dairy and livestock economies, and LUVAS was created to concentrate expertise that had previously been part of a broader agricultural university. Its development therefore reflects both continuity with a long-established veterinary college and a newer institutional model focused entirely on veterinary, livestock and allied sciences. The university also contributes to disease surveillance, diagnostics, farmer outreach and continuing professional education for the veterinary sector.
