Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar Summary
Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCS HAU) is a state agricultural university in Hisar with a central role in agricultural education, research and extension in Haryana. Its institutional roots include the Government Agriculture College established at Hisar on 17 July 1962. The college initially operated under Punjab University and became part of Punjab Agricultural University when that university was created in December 1962. Following the reorganization of Punjab and the creation of Haryana, an autonomous Haryana Agricultural University was established on 2 February 1970 through a Presidential Ordinance; the arrangement was subsequently placed on a statutory footing through the Haryana and Punjab Agricultural Universities Act, 1970. The university later took the name of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. CCS HAU combines degree education with a large agricultural research and extension system. Its constituent academic areas include agriculture, agricultural engineering and technology, basic sciences and humanities, community science, fisheries and related agricultural disciplines. Research stations and experimental farms support work across different agro-climatic regions of Haryana, allowing scientists to test crop varieties, production systems, farm machinery, soil and water practices, plant protection methods and livestock-linked technologies. The university’s contribution to improved farm practices and crop productivity has connected it closely with the Green Revolution era and subsequent agricultural modernization in northern India. It received the Indian Council of Agricultural Research’s Best Institution Award in 1997. The university also maintains a substantial land base for teaching, research farms and outstation experimentation. Its extension system transfers university-developed knowledge to farmers through training, demonstrations and advisory services. CCS HAU therefore operates not simply as a campus university but as an integrated agricultural knowledge system linking students, scientists, field stations, extension personnel and farming communities across Haryana. Its statewide research centres and experimental farms test technologies across different soil, climate and cropping conditions.
